Shikdamakha(or Chikdamakha) village with 89 households in Karbi Anglong district had taken collective mobilization of human and community resources to ensure cleanliness resulted in Shikdamakha being adjudged the cleanest village in the district by the Government of Assam.
The Principal secretary of Karbi Anglong Autonomous Council bestowed the title of 'Cleanest village' on Shikdamakha village which is located in the Amri block of West Karbi Anglong.
The small Christian pre-dominantly Tiwa village woke up to the need for cleanliness when it found mounds of organic and inorganic waste left behind after every weekly market before the Christmas Celebration of 2010. Buyers and sellers from the neighboring villages would gather in Shikdamakha and leave behind piles of waste. It was while cleaning the detritus of the weekly heat that the villagers decided to make cleanliness a way of life. They formed various sub-committees and each was entrusted with the task of keeping the village clean. Among other measures, the villagers hang a bamboo basket, woven by themselves, in front of their homes. It is the duty of the villagers to collect any piece of paper or plastic on the road and deposit them in the organic bins.
The villagers are lovely, kind hearted and well mannered. Shikdamakha has its own natural beauty, it has a orchid park with hundreds varieties of orchids, flowers at every tree which bestows an amazing beauty around the village.
The people of Shikdamakha has given life examples to people that nothing is impossible in matter of being cleanliness and their hard work has given them best results in their own life by making Shikdamakha the cleanest village of Assam.
